Chrysalis Escape

[FwD Homepage]

The last of the ground troops of the invaders have been destroyed, with a minimal loss of life for the Chirr'T'Thar. The felitaurs are tired, but in better spirits now that things are safer on Nexus. The temporary camp near Haven is fairly busy with a bustle of work being done on damaged shuttles and other equipment. Copernicus, looking a lot less haggard, is buried up to his hind hips in the guts of one shuttle, his better profile is all that's showing.

Chastity is carried into the clearing atop a felitaur. Depositing her on a rock and giving her a thorough fuzzle, he ambles off to the other side of the shuttle.

Chimera waves to Chastity from where he's poking through the broken bits of machinery near the shuttles.

Copernicus's tail is wagging, but that's about all you can see of him.

Chastity smiles quietly, and waves to Chimera, setting her weight on her cane as she wanders over to the remains of the shuttle.

Copernicus sighs from inside the shuttles repulsor coils, "Hard to decide if we should repair these or replace them."

Chastity glances over at the felitaur tail sticking in the air with a bit of a start, then her ears pinken. "Err... hello, Chimera... and is that Copernicus...?

"Would you like some junk, Chastity?" asks Chimera as he wipes grease off his hands. "Yes, that is one end of him."

*THUNK* Ouch! and Coper's voice calls out, "Yep, it's me. Chastity right? Let me just put a test charge through these coils to see if they're salvageable, and the rest of me will be right out, ok?"

Chastity shakes her head, looking bewildered. "No, no thank you, Chimera. Good heavens, what happened?"

Chimera gestures for Chastity to move aside, out of any likely trajectory the felitaur may be launched into by the test..

Chastity blinks, glancing at Chimera, and shuffles to one side. "Uhm, Coper, I wouldn't suggest putting a test charge in that while you -in- it...

A few fumbling sounds, then a small electronic whine builds slightly and Copernicus purrs out, "How else can I see if the coils make a stable field."

The whine builds, then levels for a moment, then a flash of light and a lot of crackling noises, plus the smell of burnt fur comes out in the smoke.

Chimera explains to the vixen, "They're vehicles can't tell them if it works or not."

Chastity gasps. "Uhoh..."

Chimera calls into the hole, "Is the shuttle going to blow up now?"

Copernicus mutters loudly and starts wiggling his way out, "No, it's not going to blow up. I just forgot how large my ears are Chimera." and he stands up with the tips of his large ears smoking just a bit. "Hello Chastity, good to see you again."

Chimera hmms, looking vaguely disappointed that the shuttle didn't explode, and goes back to rummaging in the junk pile.

Chastity blinks, unable to take her eyes away from the smoking tips of Copernicus's ears. "Er, good to see you, too, Copernicus.... I've been in the mountains all this time and didn't hear much news. What happened to the shuttle?"

In a large tent off to the side, several recuperating felitaurs are being tended by other felitaurs. And one figure who is not a felitaur is surrounded by them, as if they believe the contact will help her.

Copernicus sighs, "A war with some very single minded invaders. More accurately, just a very nasty first skirmish."

Camilla lies as she has for days, now, with no sign of movement, and precious little respiration, her hands folded on her chest like someone laid in a sarcophagus.

The felitaurs around the reptilian lady do check her vitals now and then, and wonder who the heck she is, and if she has anything to do with the invaders.

Camilla changes color to dull gold.

Copernicus hmms at Chastity, "We never did figure out where you came from did we?"

Chastity blinks, glancing over at the tent with all the activity, and wincing visibly. "I hope you don't mind my saying, but.. I'm glad I missed it..."

Copernicus nods quietly, "I wish I had, believe me. It's been millennia since so many of us have been killed in battles."

Chimera says, "It was a very interesting skirmish."

Camilla's tail-tip flicks, and curls around one of the felitaur's legs.

Copernicus purrs, "I'd call it horrendous. So, while wandering around, have you come up with any clues to your location?"

One of the felitaur doctors starts, "Well, she's alive after all. Contact Coper, he'll want to talk to her if she can talk."

Chastity shakes her head, siting heavily on a rock. "I'm afraid not," she sighs. "None of the constellations are familiar, none of the world-names I've heard ring a bell."

Camilla mutters, "Does it have to be so loud?"

The doctor puts a paw on Camilla's forehead, "Is our talking too loud for you?"

Chastity blinks and sits up straight, looking over at the tent.

Camilla aighs! and flails about, sliding off her bed.

Copernicus nods, and blinks as a 'gem' on his armband chimes then gives him a short communication. "It seems our other visitor is waking up. Maybe you'll know her Chastity?"

Chimera wipes off more grease, and heads for the hospital tent.

Chastity stands up, a little too quickly, and almost stumbles before keeping herself standing with her cane. "What...?"

Camilla hides behind the bed, staring at the doctor with eyes like dinner plates. "Wha?.. Who are you?"

The more draconian-shaped head of Chimera pokes into the tent to see what's happening.

Camilla blinkblinks at the ... winged mammalian hexaped before her.

Copernicus pads in, "That is doctor Imbri, and I am Copernicus Skygazer Talorn, of the Chirr'T'Thar. You had a crash landing near here recently."

Camilla's tail curls around her ankle. "Who *are* you?"

Camilla changes color to dull yellow.

Chimera comes the rest of the way in and waves over Copernicus' shoulder to the small dragon. "Hi."

Copernicus purrs, "Well, I'm sort of the regulator for the city of Chareka on Tharhome. Most just call me a relatively harmless nuisance. We're a bit more curious as to who YOU are m'lady.""

Camilla waves, timidly. "Hi." She turns to Copernicus. "Tharhome? Chareka? Um ... " She stands up, one arm crossed over her chest, and she fidgets. "Um .. that's pretty far away, isn't it?"

Copernicus purrs, "From here, it's a few light years. A days travel by ship, or a quick hop through the gate. I assume you mean far from where you are from?"

Copernicus looks at Chastity, "Does she seem to be from a familiar race?"

Camilla changes color to dull ochre.

Camilla tilts her head, more curious than frightened.

Chimera tries to move closer. "Are your chromatophores under conscious control? I'm Chimera, do you have a name?"

Chastity limps up timidly behind Chimera and Copernicus, her tail swishing slightly in concern.

"Chromatophores?" Camilla blinks. "Oh ... my color."

Camilla changes color to bright green.

Camilla smiles sheepishly. "Mostly, they are, yes."

Copernicus moves out of the way so Chastity can have a better look.

Chimera sits down on the floor, and nods. "It's a very pleasing effect."

Camilla changes color to mature silvery hue.

Camilla says, "Um, thanks, I think."

Chastity shakes her head quietly. "N-no, not to me... I'm sure there were chamaeleons in Cygnus, but I'd retired after the waves of immigrants....

Copernicus hmms, "Well, looks like the spatial instabilities around this planet have snagged yet another person. Camilla, when you first came out of that escape pod, you seemed rather upset and threatened Jenora, the one who helped rescue you. Is someone after you?"

Copernicus smirks a bit at Chimera, "I have to agree, the color changes are very pretty."

Camilla says, "Jenora? I don't know any Jenora. Escape pod?"

Camilla changes color to iridescent turquoise.

Copernicus purrs, "She's a friend of ours. A bipedal female felinoid. You came out of a capsule filled with some sort of goo."

Camilla looks at each person in turn. "Um, does it have to be that loud?"

Copernicus motions to Chastity to have a seat on his back, rather than stand for too long on her bad leg. He blinks and purrs, "We're speaking softly. Is it too loud for your ears?"

Chimera whispers, "It could have been a stasis pod. What is the last thing you remember?"

Camilla frowns. "You really don't hear that, do you?" She ignores the questions.

Copernicus purrs, "Hear what? My hearing is usually pretty good in comparison to most people."

Chastity pushes herself up, setting herself on Copernicus' back gingerly, as she tilts her head to the side, listening quietly.

"Oh." The chameleoness's tail uncurls. "Um, never mind then. Maybe I've got .. 'tinnitus' or something. You said I was in an escape pod. I .. guess I took a really bad spill."

Copernicus nods, "The pod entered the atmosphere at a dangerous speed and angle. Our friend Jenora kept it from splattering all over a valley. What were you escaping from?"

Camilla changes color to deep blue.

"I don't remember," says Camilla, looking at her clawed feet.

Camilla blinkblinks at Coper.

Copernicus looks at Chastity and Chimera, "Maybe our invaders got her ship? Or she just got a bad bump on the way down?"

Copernicus purrs, "Do you know who you are?"

Chastity shakes her head quietly. "It's possible. It fits in with the timetable I was told."

"I'm Camilla"

The chameleon's eyes flit from one person to the next.

Chastity smiles softly. "Hello, Camilla."

Copernicus bows his torso slightly, "Pleased to meet you. As I said, I'm Copernicus. This lady is Chastity, and the small draconoid by you is Chimera. So, what can you remember about yourself?"

Camilla changes color to jet black.

Camilla says, "My name is Camilla, and I'm a dragoness. ... I ... I can dance. And play. Instruments, I mean. And I can type. At least, I think I can type, I don't know."

Copernicus hmms, "An entertainer. Though I've never heard of 'typing'. What type of instrument is that played on?"

Chastity tilts her head to the side. "What was the last thing you remember, dear?"

Chimera scrunches down to make himself seem smaller.

Camilla frowns at Chastity. "I remember a room."

Copernicus scritches Chimera's ears while he lets Chastity talk. An elderly fox lady is probably not as intimidating as a 550 pound nearly horse sized felitaur. He double checks his list of things to do today and ponders.

Chimera hmms, thinking that Camilla was not exactly traveling voluntarily before her crash.

"And there was a spotlight..." Camilla gestures into empty space. "And when there's a spotlight on you, you can't hardly see anything else, you know. The rest of the room was dark."

Chastity frowns softly. "A room... and a spotlight. Do you remember.. anyone with you?"

Copernicus's still slightly singed ears focus on Camilla. That sounds like an interrogation.

Camilla holds her hands out at her sides, parallel with the floor. "No, because it was a solo number. You know, just a step in four-quarter time, then you spin ... " She arches her foot, and spins on strong toes, her tail tracing the air behind her. (There's lots of floor-space in felitaur tents.) "And then again, only in a square."

Chimera says, "You were performing on a stage?"

Camilla nodnods, like that's obvious. Then she frowns. "Sorry. I don't mean to be rude."

Copernicus purrs, "No need to apologize Camilla. We come from some very different cultures. It's to be expected that we won't fully understand each other at first."

Camilla nods. "Okay. Well, it was a simple step, really, I don't know why I was doing it. .. And then there was that smell .. "

Chastity nods thoughtfully. "No, not rude at all... some of us have different experiences with that kind of environment, that's all." A little more coherently, she coughs, and asks, "What happened after you danced?"

Chimera says, "Did the smell make you sleepy?"

"No. Not sleepy." Camilla's brow furrows, as she stares off into space. "Like .. rotten eggs. Then there was a flash!" She points at Chastity. "Right there! It was so close, it was a burst of flame! Goodness, then there was that smell all *over* the place."

Chastity blinks, her brow furrowing as she tries to combine all the imagery in her mind. "Rotten egg smell... flash, fire...."

Chimera says, "Methane."

Camilla says, "Oh, goodness, it was awful. It was burning fur. Burning fur, I'm sure of it. And .. and other stuff, oh wow." She covers her mouth with her hands. "Oh goodness, somebody got burned, didn't they?""

Copernicus listens quietly.

Camilla changes color to fuligin black.

Camilla's bites her lip. "Someone got burned really badly, and I don't know who it was."

Chastity blinks, her ears perking. "Did you hear any shouting, anyone saying anything?

Camilla blinkblinks. "Huh?" She remembers there are people here. "Oh, yes, there was shouting, there was confusion. There were howls and screams, not like the murmuring and mumbling from before."

Chimera hmms. This is a bit beyond his experience.

Copernicus purrs, "Sounds like she was performing for a small audience, and then something happened. Either an accident or an attack."

Camilla points at Coper. "Yes. Yes, that must be it." She sighs, and her shoulders droop.

Chimera says, "Where was the stage?"

Chastity nods quietly. "Camilla, do you have any impression of what happened? A sense of tension that would indicate an attack, or a some other kind of feeling?

Camilla says, "It was ..." She pauses, then bites her lip. Her tail curls up behind her. "I don't know. Not here on Farhome I should think."

Camilla says, "I had to leave, I know that."

Copernicus purrs, "Farhome?"

Chimera swishes his tail a bit, pondering something.

Camilla says, "Isn't that what you said? Chakra on Farhome? Where we are?"

Copernicus purrs, "Oh, no, Tharhome. We're on a planet called "Nexus" by the folks who've been here a little while."

Camilla ohs. "Tharhome." She tilts her head. "What's a 'thar' ?"

Chimera says, "Camilla, were you raised to dance, and do nothing else? Are dancers different than others in your society?"

Copernicus chuckles, "I'm a Chirr'T'Thar. ;)"

Camilla smiles nervously at Copernicus. "Um, of course. I've not seen a .. 'Chirr'T'Thar' before." She turns to Chimera. "My 'society'? What?"

Chimera scratches his chin. "Were you bred to dance?"

Camilla is taken aback. "Bred to dance?" She puts a hand to her collarbone.

Camilla changes color to dark crimson.

Copernicus ears go back, as the Chirr'T'Thar have a race memory of slavery that is over 500,000 years old, "I sincerely hope not Chimera."

Camilla starts to form a reply, and then bites her lip and stops.

"Was I bred to dance?" mutters the chameleon. Her eyeridges knit. "I .. I can't answer that. I don't know."

Copernicus purrs, "It's not important anyhow. You are here, and we do not allow anyone to have slaves, so you are free now.""

Chastity says a little quickly. "Ah.. what do you remember before the dance, Camilla?"

Chimera whispers to Copernicus, "I fear she has some memory loss. Perhaps we shouldn't question her about her past for now."

Camilla says, "My head hurts."

Copernicus hmms and nods to Chimera, "Sorry, we're much too nosy by nature."

"No, it's okay. I'm glad you show such concern for me." Camilla looks down at the bed she had been lying on. "How long was I sleeping?"

Copernicus purrs, "You've been in a coma for nearly 3 weeks Camilla."

Chimera smiles to the dragoness, and asks, "Are you hungry?"

Camilla says, "Three weeks? Goodness."

Camilla changes color to orange.

Camilla says, "I could use some water."

Copernicus motions Chimera over to the water tanks.

Chimera gets up and follows the felitaur.

One of Imbri's aides brings Copernicus a chart. He blinks, "Unable to give solid or liquid diet for the entire time? You haven't had anything to eat in three weeks?"

Camilla frowns. "Is something wrong?"

Chastity slips off Copernicus's back, and slides into a seat nearby Camilla. She smiles quietly to the dragoness. "For now, maybe you'd best relax, dear. You seem to have been through a lot!"

Copernicus points Chimera to a small pitcher and a spigot to fill it with, then purrs, "Well, that's a long time to be without food...isn't it?"

Chimera holds the pitcher and shrugs.

Camilla looks askance at Chastity, then nods and sits down gingerly on the bed, careful of her tail. "I'm not hungry, if that's what you're asking."

A felitaur helps Chimera with the spigot, then gives him a kiss and pads off.

Copernicus hmms, "What do you eat?"

Chimera brings the pitcher and a glass over to Camilla, and pours some water for her. "Better taste this first before drinking much."

Chastity smiles and shakes her head "More of, are you tired still?" she reconsiders asking that, considering Camilla's been asleep fro three weeks. "Er, Well, now that you're up and about this must be all perplexing." She adds quietly deadpan, "It was for me....

"I dine upon the chameleon's dish." She nods a thank you to Chimera, and tastes the water. "Um, is it supposed to have that metallic after-taste?"

Copernicus hmms, "Should be close to pure with our filtration system."

Camilla drinks it anyway.

Chimera hmms, and tastes some water himself. "Only a few trace minerals. What is a chameleon's dish? Is it food or something you eat from?"

Camilla blushes in the face, and dips her head, smiling. "Sorry, that was an automatic response. The 'chameleon's dish' is just air."

Copernicus makes a note for the doctor that Camilla's senses seem very acute, even compared to the Chirr'T'Thar's. He blinks, "You survive on air only?"

Chastity blinks in surprise. "On.. air?"

Chimera nods. "Do you need sunlight as well?"

Camilla blinkblinks at all the skeptical eyes on her. "Um ... well .. that's my understanding, yes."

Camilla says, "Sunlight? Goodness, I don't think so."

Chimera smiles, "I would like to examine your mitochondria sometime."

Copernicus sighs, "Chimera, I think now is not a time to bring up your hobbies."

Camilla blanches. "My mitochondria are my own business!"

Camilla folds her arms across her chest protectively.

Chimera blinks in confusing between the felitaur and the dragoness.

Copernicus purrs, "Don't worry Camilla. Chimera doesn't realize that some races consider their internal functions to be private."

Chastity glances between Chimera and Camilla. "Uhm... he was only expressing curiosity, Camilla.. I think...

Camilla says, "My mitochondria have the parthenogenic history of my sublimitation. That, sir, is hardly a polite request."

Camilla blinkblinks. "I mean .. um ... well, we'll see."

Camilla sips her water.

Chastity blinks, amazed that she barely understood what that means.

Chimera ahs.

Chimera says, "That explains much. I apologize for being forward."

Copernicus blinks at Chimera, "That made sense to you?"

Camilla says, "No, it's okay. You have a right to be curious. I've been inveigling on your hospitality."

Camilla fidgets with her clawed fingers.

Chimera nods to Copernicus. "I think so. I believe it to mean she is part of an asexual race that may also pass down genetic memory via the telomeres of their mitochondrial DNA. I expect she is also a chimera of sorts, a combination of animal and vegetable. This is only a guess however."

Copernicus chuckles, "We're a pretty hospitable race Camilla, and someone who doesn't need to eat is hardly an imposition."

Copernicus hmmms at Chimera, "Intriguing idea."

Camilla contemplates Chimera's horn. "Um .. I'm just a dragon."

Chastity blinks at Chimera, totally lost. "Er.. oh, don't worry about it, Camilla. You're not infringing..

Chimera says, "She may also originate from a world with a high nitrogen content."

Chimera smiles to Camilla, "I was made by dragons."

Camilla scrutinizes Chimera with new interest. "Made?"

Chimera nods. "I'm artificial, but still alive. It's complicated."

Camilla ohs.

Copernicus purrs, "I know. I've actually been inside Lothryn, the living tower of whom Chimera is a part. I think?"

"A part?" Camilla starts. "Synchedoche?" She leans away from Chimera. "You have sympathy with a collective organism?"

Chimera says, "I am an extension of a single super-organism. It is not collective."

Chimera smiles, "Like a child with an invisible umbilical chord."

Camilla says, "Does that mean you have .. some sort of telepathy?"

Copernicus hmms, "I guess I didn't understand it very well."

Chastity just tries to follow along as best as she can, looking between Camilla and Chimera. She glances briefly at Copernicus.

Chimera nods to Camilla. "I have access to my parent's mind and memories."

Camilla says, "But no constant telepathy, then?"

"Yes, it is constant," the remote explains. "All of my experiences are continuously transmitted to her."

Camilla ahs.

Camilla watches Chimera warily.

Chimera says, "Are you familiar with such beings?"

Camilla says, "No. No, I'm not."

A tap is heard on the tent flap, followed by Jenora's head peeking in. "Hello?"

Chastity looks up, and smiles softly, 'Hello, Jenora.'

Copernicus purrs, "I've been around him for a couple years, and I'm still not familiar with him. ;) Well, I was thinking that maybe we could use some fresh air and...oh, Hello Jenora. ;)" and snugs her and gives her a welcoming headrub."

Camilla looks over at Jenora, blankly.

Jenora mrrrs. "Hello. How are things going?"

Copernicus purrs, "The lady you helped rescue is awake now, but has very little memory unfortunately."

Chimera wiggles his fingers in greeting to Jenora.

Camilla changes color to golden-brown.

Jenora says, "Oh! All right... how is she doing aside from that?"

Copernicus purrs, "Apparently fine, but ask her yourself. ;)"

Copernicus purrs, "Camilla, this is Jenora. Jenora, Camilla."

Jenora bows to Camilla. "Good day."

"Hi." The chameleon stands up, and bows to Jenora, making sure that her head descends to the right, and lower than Jenora's did.

Jenora notes this, and files it away for future reference. "How are you feeling?"

Camilla smacks her lips, and sets down the empty glass. "Aside from a little confused, I'm okay, I guess." She contemplates herself. "I'm not damaged, I don't feel pain."

Camilla smiles timidly.

Jenora says, "That's good to hear. Hopefully we can help clear up the confusion, though considering how little we know about you I'm not sure how much we can help."

Copernicus hmms, "Well, I was about to suggest a trip to where our "permanent base" will be set up. Maybe make it a picnic too?"

Chastity smiles softly. "I don't see why not..."

Jenora says, "Sounds good to me."

Camilla says, "I do appreciate all your help. Goodness, you hardly know me, and you're so kind."

Copernicus purrs, "We're a friendly race for the most part. I can carry Chastity and Camilla, and Jenora can get Chimera? Or will you fly on your own?"

Chimera says, "I can fly the distance."

Copernicus purrs, "So, let me get some things, and then we'll meet outside in a minute?"

Camilla says, "Um, carry?"

Copernicus flexes his wings, "I haven't lost a passenger. Honest. ;)"

Jenora grins to Camilla. "We tend to be that way, yes."

A few minutes later, the group gathers outside. Copernicus gives Jenora some bags to carry, and helps Chastity onto his taur back and purrs, "You want some help Camilla?"

Camilla blinkblinks. "Um, carry?"

Copernicus stretches his wings to their full 40 foot plus wingspan and purrs, "Yep. I'll help fly you two over to the island."

Chastity glances at Camilla. "It's really not that bad at all. You just have to.. er, hold on. Tight."

Camilla bites her lip. "Um ... I think I should stay here and rest. My head still hurts and I'm ..." She gulps. "I'm not sure how tightly I can hold on."

Chimera says, "Would you like one of us to stay with you, Camilla?"

Jenora looks at Camilla. "Something wrong?"

Copernicus chuckles, "You don't have to hold on that tightly, and I can always secure you with my tail."

"I'd rather not fly, thank you," Camilla says flatly.

Jenora says, "Ahh.... I see."

Copernicus hmmms, "Must be related to Tarin. Well then, you can stay here and rest. I'd prefer you not wander off. We're kind of responsible for you by tradition. ;)"

Camilla says, "Where would I go?"

Camilla's tail curls around the leg of the bed.

Chastity glances at Copernicus. Ah.. Chimera is right, someone should stay with her...

Copernicus purrs, "Well, there is a stream nearby, and a few nice overlooks. If you need anything, just ask. Everyone else ready? Hmmm, true, but there are plenty of aides here if she needs anything."

Camilla nods. "Thank you, Doctor Copernicus." She bows, and then smiles.

Camilla changes color to reptile green.

Copernicus chuckles, "I'm not a doctor. I never finished my studies. ;)"

Jenora nods. "I'm sure we can work out alternate methods of transportation as well."

Chimera says, "Perhaps when the shuttles are repaired."

Camilla ohs.

Camilla says, "Perhaps."

Camilla sits down, gingerly.

Chastity blinks, looking around. "Ah.. Coper, how far offshore is the island?

Copernicus purrs, "Or we can get Tylen to take you over in a boat. It's about 2-3 miles Chastity, why?"

Chastity says, "Just that if she ever does want to go to the island, I hope somebody has a boat. It's best not to fight a.. a reluctance, to fly..."

Camilla giggles. "Maybe I'll just stay here and look for a -real- doctor."

Copernicus nods, "We'll be shipping some things by boat to keep Tylen and the Haven council happy. We'll be back in a bit Camilla. Take care. And my sister Andromeda will be by later, she'll be happy to entertain you for a bit."

Camilla nods. "Thank you all. I don't know how I can repay you for this kindness."

Chimera says, "Perhaps you could dance for us once you are recovered. :}"

Chastity smiles softly. "Don't worry about it, Camilla, dear...."

Camilla smiles. "Perhaps I could." She does a quick pirouette.

Copernicus purrs, "Being a friend is payment enough. The Chirr'T'Thar can use all the friends they can. Well, hold on Chastity, it's time to head out."

Jenora bows. "See you later, then."

Chastity blinks. "Hold on? Oh, no..." She grips Coper's neckfur tightly....

Chimera smiles and bows to Camilla before spreading his own wings.

Copernicus 'sits' down, then leaps into the air, his wings snapping open as he takes off towards the island.

Chastity's yelp echoes back, faintly, fading off into the distance.

Camilla blinkblinks,and watches the display.

Jenora chuckles, shaking her head, and just sort of starts glowing as she rises into the air.

Chimera flies off in a more mundane fashion.

Camilla watches them fly away, biting her lip. Her brow furrows. "I wonder what they did with my gun," she mutters, and then sits down on the bed lotus-style. She sighs.
