Tutorial 3, CIS133DA
Instructor: Phil Waclawski
Fall 2008
Student Name _______________
- Name two protocols that handle INCOMING mail. Which one do we use here
on campus? (hint, we discussed them in class)
- Which of the following three are case sensitive?
- Email addresses
- URLs
- Domain names
- Why is it bad form to attach a web page? How SHOULD you do it if
you're being nice? (For example, type exactly what you would type in an
email to get pbs.org to work without attaching it)
- Name three things that you should not do in your email (other than
attach web pages) and why you shouldn't do them.
-
-
-
- Give an example of a dedicated email program and a web base email
site. How are they different? What are the advantages/disadvantages of
each? What do you use the most?
- Explain what the differences/advantages/disadvantages of replying,
forwarding and replying all have in email?
- Your instructor has said that email only sends ASCII (or plain text).
If that is true, then how do the following get done in email?
- Attaching pictures and files
- Fancy fonts, tables, bulleted lists?
- What, in your opinion, is bad about email SPAM? (Name 3 things)
- Find two web-sites (and paste the URLS here) that talk about spam
prevention. Explain what they feel should be done, and feel free to add
your opinion of how well you think it would work. Why does spam still exist
if no one wants it?
- Explain the differences between the old fashioned mailing lists (that
use Listserv/majordomo etc) and the newer web and email based ones that
you can find at groups.yahoo.com and so on? Give at least 3 things about
each, including advantages and disadvantages.
