Cool Insect Facts
  • Female mosquitoes buzz their wings at about 400 Hz (middle C)
  • Stinging insects are all female. (The sting is derived from the ovipositor, an egg laying device.)
  • Blood sucking insects are usually female also, this is to get a protein meal for their eggs.

  • Bee, Wasp and Ant females can determine the sex of their offspring. They store sperm in a special structure called a spermatheca. A fertilized egg is female, an unfertilized egg is male. (So females are diploid, males are haploid).
